Agricultural Drone Labels Are Approved — What Should Growers Do First Before Operating a T100?

🇨🇦 Agricultural Drone Labels Have Finally Been Approved. So Where Should Growers Start?

Last Friday, agricultural drone application labels were finally approved in Canada. Unsurprisingly, our phones started ringing almost immediately.

Picos Over the past few days, we’ve spoken with growers from all kinds of operations. Some have already started looking into the T100. Others are comparing brands and dealers. A few are wondering whether they should move quickly before everyone else gets ahead. We’ve even had growers ask for pricing before they’ve fully thought through what operating a drone program would actually look like on their farm.

After years of working with agricultural drone operators, we’ve noticed that many people focus on the purchase before they think about the operation.

The first question is usually, “Which drone should I buy?”

In reality, that’s rarely the first question that should be asked.

A better question is, “If I decide to bring a drone into my operation, what do I need to understand before I spend the money?”

Over the years, we’ve seen plenty of growers bring home a new drone full of excitement. The manuals get read, the YouTube videos get watched, and the equipment sits in the shop ready for its first day of work. Then reality starts to set in. Questions come up that nobody mentioned during the sales process, and suddenly evenings are spent searching forums, watching tutorials, and trying to piece together information from half a dozen different sources.

Agricultural drones have become incredibly capable machines, but they are not magic. Like any other piece of farm equipment, the value comes from understanding how to use them properly.

Before making a purchasing decision, there are five things we believe every grower should understand.

    1. Who Can Legally Operate an Agricultural Drone?

Many growers naturally compare drones to tractors, sprayers, or combines. In reality, they have far more in common with aviation equipment than most people realize.

That is why questions about licensing, regulations, and flight requirements often create confusion for first-time users. Can a farm employee operate the drone? Can a family member fly it? What certifications are required? How do those requirements affect day-to-day operations?

Understanding the regulatory side of drone operations early on will save a great deal of frustration later and will help determine who should ultimately be responsible for operating the equipment.

    2. Does My Farm Require an Advanced Certificate?

This has easily become one of the most common questions we’ve received since the label approvals were announced.

Many growers hear the words “Advanced Certificate” and immediately assume the process will be complicated. The reality is that requirements vary depending on where and how the drone will be operated.

Some situations are relatively straightforward, while others require additional planning and preparation. Taking the time to understand those requirements before purchasing equipment can prevent unexpected surprises later on.

    3. How Should the Drone Be Set Up for My Farm?

Demonstrations tend to focus on the exciting parts of the technology. Growers see automatic flight planning, autonomous operation, and highly efficient application systems.

What they don’t always see are the countless small decisions that determine whether the application is successful.

    Crop type matters.

    Product choice matters.

    Weather conditions matter.

    Field conditions matter.

Two operators can use the exact same drone in the exact same field and achieve very different results depending on how they configure and operate the equipment.

In our experience, many performance issues are not caused by the drone itself. More often, they come from a lack of understanding about settings, application techniques, or operating procedures. Equipment can be purchased in a day. Operational experience usually takes much longer to develop.

    4. Who Are You Buying From?

At first glance, it is easy to assume that a drone is a drone and that every dealer offers essentially the same thing.

A few years later, many growers discover that purchasing the equipment was actually the easiest part of the process.

The real questions begin after the sale.

    Who helps when software changes?

Who helps when a new label is approved?

Who answers questions about application settings?

Who provides support when something isn’t working the way it should?

These are the situations that rarely appear in advertisements but become very important once the equipment is being used regularly.

Price matters, but experience, training capability, technical knowledge, and long-term support matter as well.

    5. Who Will Help You Continue Learning?

One thing we’ve learned over the years is that experience has tremendous value, but it is rarely free.

Most experience is earned through mistakes, close calls, wasted time, and lessons learned the hard way.

A strong training system serves a different purpose. Rather than helping people recover after something goes wrong, it helps them recognize risks before they become problems. When operators understand regulations, equipment limitations, application settings, and safety procedures from the beginning, many of the common issues that frustrate new users simply never happen.

That is one reason some operators go years without a serious incident while others encounter problems almost immediately.

The difference is often not the equipment itself, but the support system behind it.

Before You Buy, Take the Time to Understand the Bigger Picture

The approval of agricultural drone labels represents an important milestone for the industry. It has created opportunities that many growers have been waiting years to see.

At the same time, opportunity does not necessarily mean everyone should immediately place an order.

For some farms, owning and operating a drone may be the right choice. For others, working with a professional application provider may make more sense. Every operation is different, and there is no single answer that fits everyone.

What we do believe is that growers should take the time to understand these questions before making a decision. Once those answers become clear, the next steps usually become much clearer as well.

    What’s Next?

If you’re just beginning to explore agricultural drones or trying to determine whether a T100 is the right fit for your operation, we encourage you not to rush the decision.

Take the time to understand the regulations, evaluate your operation, and ask questions.

To help growers better understand how agricultural drones fit into today’s farming environment, we will be hosting a live demonstration event on June 27th. Topics will include current regulations, real-world applications, T100 capabilities, flight safety, risk management, ownership models, and customer experiences.

For growers who would prefer to discuss their own operation in more detail, we also offer one-on-one phone consultations and Zoom meetings. Whether you farm 100 acres or 10,000 acres, we’re happy to discuss your crops, your goals, and your operation to help you determine what approach makes the most sense.

In many cases, a 15- to 30-minute conversation can save months of trial and error.

Register for the demonstration event or schedule a Zoom meeting with our team to continue the conversation.

Our goal has never been simply to sell a drone. Our goal is to help growers build a safe, reliable, and profitable drone operation that creates value for years to come.
